Chameleon Brief History

Version 1.0

Version 1.0 was funded in part by GeoConnections through NRCan in partnership with CTIS in Sherbrooke. The original development effort was to build CWC2 - the CGDI WMS Client Components. This project was largely successful in proving the technology was feasible, but lacked in several key areas including performance and dependency on OGC services. During development of 1.0, we determined that the core of CWC2 could be very useful to build MapServer applications. We renamed the core as Chameleon and targetted it as a 1.1 release.

Version 1.0 works only with OGC services. It provides a service instance that is invoked via HTTP. It supports a set of generic widgets plus several application specific widgets written for Toporama II and GeoBase applications.

Version 1.1

Version 1.1 is called Chameleon and is a generic web mapping toolkit based on MapServer, PHP/MapScript and PHP. While 1.1 uses the same templating engine, it has undergone some significant changes to remove the dependency on OGC services, and to remove the CWC2 Service Instance mode of operation. Version 1.1 has been used in a number of applications, including Php.W2GI, but is generally a development version.

Version 1.1 is unstable and will not be released. The stable version will be 1.99

Version 2.0

Version 2.0 represents the release of the new chameleon core, with the CWC2 service instance and 26 stable widgets. An Autodoc Documentation Framework, with the 26 widgets completely documented with other very useful Chameleon documentation. Also the release of the new Chameleon Community site (which you currently are on.
